Trope Analysis- Doomed Hometown

The Doomed Hometown is a story element, or Trope, wherein the destruction of a city or town that the hero is attached to one way or another serves as the catalyst to begin or otherwise inform the Hero's Journey. The Trope can be done well just as it can be done TERRIBLY, no matter the medium. This includes video games, of course. But what is it about the Trope that makes it so pervasive? Today, we talk about this.

Announcement

So I haven't blogged in a while. Sorry about that, I was on vacation. Anyway, I'm back and ready to talk games again!

This year promises to be very busy for me, so you'll see a decrease in content, much like during 2017. However, you can be sure I'll strive to bring you no less than four blogs per month, with of course December being a themed month. This December's theme hasn't been decided yet, and the abject failure of Strange Men Month has left me cautious about what I should talk about. However, I AM dedicating energy to it, no worries!

I've been playing some old school games lately, and I'm hooked on this old classic called Tales of Phantasia. You can expect a character analysis and a story analysis of this game this year! I also want to start doing trope analyses, where I analyze certain video game tropes, how they work, WHY they work, and which games use them properly. In particular I am interested in the Doomed Hometown trope, wherein the destruction of the main hero's home town propels said hero on their quest.

Character analyses are a must, of course. No planned characters yet, but I'm still looking.

Finally, I want to make a blog entry on what I think would make a great Fallout 5. I'm thinking that blog will be released around...September? Probably. Plenty to look forward to this year!

RPG: Good Idea, Bad Idea

The following is a list of things that RPG's typically do, giving a contrast of doing it well (Good Idea) versus doing it badly (Bad Idea). I will also give examples of games that apply the Good or Bad ideas. On with the list!

My Top 5 RPG Franchises (that are NOT Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest)

Yup, you've read the title, you know what you're getting. However, before we start, here's a few rules:

  1. A franchise MUST have more than one game in the series, excluding remakes.
  2. SRPG's and Action RPG's are NOT permitted, so no Kingdom Hearts, Disgaea, etc.
  3. Eastern and Western RPG's ARE permitted.
  4. Spiritual trilogies DO NOT COUNT, so no Soul Blazer-Illusion of Gaia-Terranigma!
Let's begin!

2017 in Review- Gaming

It's been...rough. I will not mince words, 2017 has NOT been a good year. And I mean in general. Still, it pays to look back at 2017 and see the good, the bad, and the just plain UGLY. Let's begin...
