PS Month: Playstation 4

Image result for PS4

It took the PS3 two whole years to get off the ground and join its brethren as a high quality, must-have console. But in 2013, the future had finally arrived: the PS4. As of this writing, the PS4 is still the current model of Playstation, with the rumored Playstation 5 to be allegedly released in the year 2020.

When the PS4 arrived, it was a literal guaranteed best seller; not just because of the Playstation brand, but because both Sony and Nintendo made some severe mistakes. Sony's XBox One pretty much shot itself in the foot by not only having no offline mode for its games, but by also making it difficult to share games with friends! What the hell was that, that I couldn't just lend a friend my disc and they could play the game on their Xbox!?

What killed the Wii U, on the  other hand, was the lack of Third Party support. The reason for this was because the Wii U was slower and less powerful than its competitors, being more comparable to a 7th generation system than an 8th. This meant the Wii U had LESS games for it than either the XBox one OR the PS4!

The PS4, on the other hand, was a system that was powerful, fast, easy to program for, and of course, affordable. Released with the common price of $399, the PS4 was almost a guaranteed seller. But it needed something: games.

As usual, the launch titles weren't THAT impressive, but they were enough to provide gamers with something to play with until the REAL good games could arrive. They did not have to wait long, thankfully, as the first BIG game of the PS4 was released in 2015: The Witcher 3.

Witcher 3 was the very first game to justify owning a PS4: a wide open world, action galore, based on the best selling Witcher series from Poland, the game was a MUST-HAVE.

In the year 2016, gamers got their second reason to buy a PS4: Uncharted 4. The grand finale of Nathan Drake's story, the game was pretty much a guaranteed best seller. Actually, the game currently sits as being the system's number one best seller, with over eight million copies sold!

Then came the year 2017, when a little game called Horizon:Zero Dawn got released. The current number 2 best selling game in the system, the game is also currently the best selling ORIGINAL IP for the PS4. All other best sellers are either sequels, reboots, or based on previous properties.

Of course, this year (2018) was no slouch either. God of War was released to near universal accolade, bringing the series to new heights. A better story, a MUCH bigger world, and a new weapon system? What's not to love?

The key to the PS4's success, and this has been the case for the entire Playstation family, is the games. No system can sell if it doesn't have good games on it, and the PS family ALWAYS has good games!

But to have good games, you need the technology to make those games the best they can be, and in THAT the Playstation never comes up short. The Playstation family has always been consistently advanced for their ages, even if they weren't the most powerful systems. No, the PS1 was NOT the most powerful system of its generation, but it was both powerful AND versatile, allowing developers to be more flexible into what kinds of games they could make for it. This is in contrast to the N64, which was more powerful, but it was hindered by using cartridges instead of discs.

Yes the Xbox was stronger than the PS2, but the PS2 was easier to develop for AND it had the advantage of brand recognition in the two strongest gaming markets on Earth: the US and Japan. Sure, the Xbox 360 was the stronger console, but it broke down easily compared to the PS3. And yes, the XBox One has more than the PS4, but the PS4 isn't hindered by so many anti-piracy policies that make it impossible to play games without an Internet connection.

The Playstation has always had that balance between technological advancement and approachability. THAT is why it's the current KING of home consoles.

And now, the summary for the PS4:

Best Selling Games: Uncharted 4, Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Monster Hunter World, Witcher 3

Games that define the console: Uncharted 4, Witcher 3, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn

Best Franchises: Uncharted, God of War, Dark Souls, Witcher

My personal top 5 (so far): Persona 5, Fallout 4, Monster Hunter World, God of War, Dark Souls 3

Thus, with a heavy heart, I close the book on the last themed month for my blog. May 2019 be good to us all.
