You read the title, you know what this is. We're going through ascending order, from worst to best. To make this list the following were considered: starting gear, stats, and levels needed for stat allocation. We begin...
10. The Deprived
This starting class is for a specific type of player: those seeking a REAL challenge. The worst starting weapon, the worst starting shield, the worst starting armor, the lowest level possible, AND stat allocations that give you the illusion of a well-rounded character, but is actually one whom you'll have to spend more work on to customize. To give you an idea: suppose you want to have a pure Strenght build. You'll need to go up 6 levels JUST to have the same starting Strength as the Warrior. The same for Faith, Dexterity, and Intelligence builds. Even for a hybrid build this character isn't very good, for the exact same reasons already listed. It's the bottom of the barrel.
9. The Thief
Three words: not for newbies. The Thief isn't bad per se, but it does have a rather weak starting weapon which requires knowledge of game mechanics that the game itself doesn't really explain too well: parrying, backstabbing, and reading enemy moves. It comes with a shortbow, making it one of only 3 starting classes with a long range option, but in my opinion it's the weakest of the three, requiring one more mechanic that perhaps a newbie might be familiar with: headshots. That said, if you're familiar with these aforementioned mechanics and are actually good at them, you may find the Thief to be the most fun starting class. I certainly do!
8. The Sorceror
A weak starting weapon and armor are the main reasons why the Sorceror is so low on this list, but there's another factor. Sorceries are great at the start of the game, where enemies are slow and telegraph their attacks; you can riposte them easily, or snipe them from afar with your Heavy Soul Arrow. But the Sorceror doesn't have the stats for much beyond either a pure Sorcery build (which are sub-par come mid-late game) or some mediocre mixed build. Its Strength level is the lowest in the game by far, and its Dexterity is nothing to write home about. Further, Sorceries eat through FP like nothing, forcing the player to dedicate Estus Flasks to become Ashen. Long story short, it's the least of the Mage classes.
7. The Herald
The Herald takes a good idea and does it well: a hybrid fighter-healer. It does the idea well enough, in spite of how weak its starting healing spell is, but this can be quickly remedied with some time. That said, its starting weapon, a spear, isn't as good as some of the other starting weapons. Its shield, though, may well be the BEST starting shield, which would be something to brag about if only the player wouldn't be able to find it later in the first area of the game!
6. The Pyromancer
Offensively speaking, a great mix of power and magic. Pyromancy is fantastic in this game, providing you with ample strategies for you to choose from, both offensive as well as defensively. That said, the Pyromancer takes a while to truly build up IF you want to be a pure Pyromancy user. This class, however, also lends itself well to being the building block for good hybrid classes, from Strenght/Faith to Dexterity/Intelligence. The only problem with this class is sub-par weaponry and armor, which can be remedied quickly.
5. The Cleric
Frankly speaking, the best starting mage. Period. Miracles in this game are overpowered, ranging from healing, to offensive magic. With this build you can either go full on mage, or mage/warrior hybrid. Unlike Sorcery builds, a Miracle build can forego using Estus Flasks due to the insane healing one can get from Miracles. Add to that a fantastic weapon that can see use all game long? Damn! The one thing keeping this class from being higher up is its subpar armor, which can be traded away later for something more comfortable.
4. The Assassin
If you want my opinion, this guy (can also be a girl) has the best starting spell in the game. Spook not only silences the noise you make while walking (sneak attacks OP) but it also prevents fall damage? HOLY SHIT THAT'S OP AS FUCK! Its starting weapon, the Estoc, is also no slouch: great range, great moveset, and decent damage that helps this class edge out the Herald as the better of the Hybrid starters. Not for newbies, though!
3. The Warrior
The Warrior possesses the strongest starting weapon in the game: the Battle Axe. With this weapon you'll be one-shotting pretty much every enemy in the Cemetary of Ash except for the Sword Master and the Ravenous Crystal Lizard. In Lothric High Wall, you'll be downing most enemies in two to three hits. Too strong! But the fact that it has piss poor Attunement, Intelligence and Faith means that this is the WORST starting class for Mage builds.
2. The Mercenary
Possessing quite possibly the best starting weapon in the game, the Mercenary is a highly versatile starting class that can be leveled up to take on any role you want. However, please be aware that this class is NOT newbie friendly: its armor is weak, its weapon confusing, and overall it requires skill to wield effectively. That said, it's one of the few starter classes to start off with a fantastic weapon that will remain good all the way to the end of the game.
1. The Knight
The best armor, one of (if not THE) best shield, a great weapon, and a fantastic allotment of stats that allow for easy customization. It was no contest, honestly: the Knight is THE best starting class of them all. What really edges it out over the other classes is its Vitality stats: the highest of the ten starters. The Knight can breeze through the start of the game tanking shots like a boss. That, combined with the simple effectiveness of its weapon, also makes the Knight the BEST class for newbies, and was in fact my very own first class.
