In honor of International Women's Day, I have assembled a SHORT list of amazing female video game characters. These are women who break the mold, who demonstrate beyond a shadow of a doubt that there are more roles for women in gaming than just being the damsel, the sidekick, or the sex reward. Not all the women in this list are heroes; you might see some villains too. These are in no particular order. Anyway, on to the list:
- Tifa, Final Fantasy 7
- Yuna, Final Fantasy 10
- Luna, Lunar: Silver Star Story
- Mia: Lunar: Silver Star Story
- Jessica. Lunar: Silver Star Story
- Jeanne, Lunar: Eternal Blue
- Lenna, Final Fantasy 5
- Faris, Final Fantasy 5
- Lara Croft, Tomb Raider
- Elena Fischer, Uncharted
- Odessa Silverberg, Suikoden
- Samus Aran, Metroid
- Chun-Li, Street Fighter 2
- Elena, Street Fighter 3
- Poison, Final Fight
- Morrigan Aensland, Darkstalkers
- Dixie Kong, Donkey Kong Country
- The Giana Siters, The Great Giana Sisters
- Jinx, League of Legends
- Leona, League of Legends
- Bellona, Smite
- Amaterasu, Okami
- Etna, Disgaea
- Agrias, Final Fantasy Tactics
- Aeris, Final Fantasy 7
- Flonne, Disgaea
- Fuko, Disgaea 4
- Yuri, King of Fighters
- Freya, Final Fantasy 9
- Maria Traydor, Star Ocean 3
Did I number ALL the great women in gaming? Not even close. I only kept is so short for the sake of time; if I were to make a list of all the amazing women in gaming, I'd need at least ten days! These were ALL just off the top of my head!
There are some critics out there who claim that women in gaming are not as varied as men. They claim that women's roles are limited, that women serve as objects for male characters or male gamers. In this blog, I say differently: women have ample roles in gaming. To prove it, you'll see this year at least six blogs dedicated to analyzing some very different women. Among the topics I'm planning:
- Character Analysis of Tifa
- The Women of Lunar and how they break and redefine gender roles in video game
- Rethinking Lara Croft- An analysis on how Lara's character is undermined by people who focus on her sex appeal.
- An Analysis of Bellona from Smite
Happy Women's Day, one and all!
